KATHMANDU, Nov 23: In what comes as a blow to residents of Kathmandu, officials at Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited have said that the production of drinking water has declined sharply, making it difficult for them to meet the growing demand for water.
Due to huge decline in production we are working to change the existing water distribution schedule, said Spokesperson for KUKL Milan Kumar Shakya, adding, We have been compelled to revise existing schedule. He said production has declined by 30 million liters of water per day as compared to production during monsoon.
The demand for drinking water is over 200 million liters a day, whereas production hardly reached 130 million liters even during the monsoon.
The new schedule would be made pubic in a week. We have called a meeting to revise the water distribution schedule, Shakya added. KUKL supplies water every third and fourth day for an hour in the monsoon, while the supply comes down to once a week during the dry season.
Shakya said the new schedule will vary depending on location. KUKL officials, however, claim that they have been trying their best to increase water supply. The office said the newly installed six deep tube wells have started production.
Each tube well has capacity to pump one million liters of water per day. Shakya said people would not get much relief from the additional production as the demand is too high.
