It’s raining money, would you let it go or harvest?

While whole country is celebrating water week with the slogan of “water and energy”, nature has been busy showering loads of money with every single drops of waterwithin these week, once again showing itsgenerosity. Not everyone gets gifton Christmas but nature is so promising, it blessed us with 38.6mm of water with bonus of hail.

Along with the tumbling of every drops of rain, many places of the city got drenched, people got distracted from their daily routine but very few people of the city also increased their savings by just harvesting the rain, so considering this bitter reality, where we become aware of the international currency rate but forget to collect the free asset around us, international poster exhibition on Rainwater Harvesting (RWH)was organized by Nepali Youth at Guthi (NYG) incollaboration with International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance(IRHA), Nepal Rainwater Harvesting Alliance ( NeRHA) ,Bio Gas Support Partnership (BSP) Nepal and Smartpaani to aware people about the boon of nature. This exhibition which showcased top 15 posters among 750 submitted posters to Geneva Raindrop Awardand 15 posters prepared by members of NYG. It aimed to make people familiar about the concept of harvesting and its benefit. The series of exhibition was organized in several places of the Kathmandu Valley including Nepal Art council and Nepal Academy of Science And Technology(NAST).

The concern and interest of people during the exhibition was very interesting as many of them were familiar about the system but were confused regardingits sustainability so, this exhibition was successful in sensitizing people about the feasibility of rainwater. While Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) is striving to meet the demand of water at the cost of NRP 9 ( $0.09) per liter, daily water demand of Kathmandu valley is 340 million liter so, with the cost of RS.306 ( $3.22) per individual, KUKL has been able to supply only 1/3 of the water demand. This short supply of water upsurges even more with the arrival of dry season where water demand of people seldom meets. Beside this investment on KUKL, thousands of our rupees is being invested for water purification and for rocket boring to extract ground water, while on other hand we have been washing our moneybag with rainwater. So rainwater harvesting has to be practiced from each and every level to save the money to meet our basic necessity for life. Along with this message the posters exhibited during the event alsoportrayed ecological benefits of rainwater.

“Picturespeaks thousands of words and these posters genially convince people to change their perception regarding rainwater and its uses,” said Awash Acharya, an engineering student. Similarly Nischal Basnyat said that “it’s really wonderful to know that how, an hour of rainfall catch could save one’s money for buying tankers of water”. Really “saving every drops of rain, saves every single penny of coins” and now months for downpours are on our way so, what do you prefer washing moneybag with water or filling it with rainwater?Choice is all ours so, better harvest than regret.
