Diarrhoea outbreak in Barpak kills 15-month-old

A 15-month-old child has died of diarrhoea in Barpak, Gorkha.

Jul 4, 2017 | Gorkha - Locals said the outbreak of diarrhoea which started two weeks ago came to the attention of the authorities only after the disease claimed the life of the child, Amrit Ghale, from Koje settlement.

Gautam Gurung, a local school teacher, said not enough was being done to prevent the disease spread in Barpak.

The local health post has been receiving up to five diarrhoea patients daily.

Anil Kumar Sah, chief medical officer at the health post, said that there was no cause for alarm and the disease will be controlled within a few  days.

The health post, however, has not launched any intervention programme in the disease-affected areas, though there are ample evidence to suggest that many people in Barpak have been compelled to drink contaminated water following the devastating earthquake of 2015.

The Gorkha Earthquake was centred at Barpak, causing a widespread damage of properties and human lives. People here are still reeling with the affects of the destructive earthquake. Many families are still living in poorly-built shacks with low standards of basic hygiene.

Officials at the District Public Health Office said they have deployed a medical team to the affected areas to contain to treat patients and contain the disease.

Kedar Raj Parajuli, the DPHO chief,  said besides administering treatment to the sick, the medical team will also conduct awareness programme to promote the habit of drinking boiled water to avoid diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal diseases.
