Water crisis hits Dhankuta

People have been reeling under acute drinking water crisis after the flood cause by incessant rainfall swept away water pipes in the district headquarters of Dhankuta.Water was supplied to the locals of Ward No 7 of Dhankuta Municipality from the confluence of Lungdhang and Nibuwa Khola via pumping system.

Chairman Dorna Guragain of Consumers Committee said water supply was completely obstructed after the pipes were swept away from both the rivers.Mayor of Dhankuta Municipality Chintan Tamang said water was being distributed from the local Patle Khola in a fire engine. He said locals were compelled to drink expensive jar and bottled water. “Rainwater collected during rainfall is used for sanitation and household purposes,” he added.

The local administration said the acute water crunch had hit the district hospital, hotels in the bazaar, police office, Armed Police Force Camp, Barakh Battalion, among other places hard. Hospital chief Amitab Thakur said the water crisis had hit the hospital hard after the drinking water project could not supply water. Guragain said he had been taking initiatives to resolve the water crisis in the district headquarters He added that new pipes would be installed with the help of local levels. He said the problems would remain the same for some time if rainfall continued.
