STATUS OF INFORMAL GROUPS

As per the data of Nepal Labor Force Survey 2008, more than 11 million people in Nepal above 14 years are employed in informal sector that constitutes 96.2% in total employment generation. These informal groups generally find shelters in rented houses, suburbs and squatters. Despite of the significant portion covered by informal groups, their management is still a big question for the government. The rural urban migrated populations are deprived from basic facilities such as housing, education, occupation, water, sanitation and hygiene. Moreover their unstable income sources further deteriorate their living standard. Upgrading the living standard of these informal sectors is an uphill task but not impossible one. Well organized informal sector can complement the effort of the government to alleviate poverty.

ABOUT GUTHI

Dedicated towards education, environment conservation, child protection services, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), GUTHI — a non-government organization — was established in 2000. The name GUTHI is borrowed from a traditional Newari culture where guthi means a committee where certain groups of people come together during the time of celebration or adversity. At that time, social service was limited and youth had less opportunity to get involved in such activities. Hence, a group of young graduates came together and form GUTHI to provide social services in communities.

Since its establishment GUTHI has been focusing its work towards sustainable development through youth mobilization in education, environment, water issues, sanitation and hygiene with integrated community development approach. Informal groups have been targeted beneficiaries since its inception. It conducted various programs and training to upgrade their livelihood focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene, entrepreneurship and education.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE

  1. Promote innovative solutions in the community education.
  2. Avail integrated water and waste water management solution for water conservation and healthy living.
  3. Maximize the use of achieved information and communication tools for the informed society.
  4. Provide platform for children, youth and women to learn, to express and to advocate.

STRATEGIC APPROACHES

  1. Strengthen community groups from the informal sectors that include street vendors, waste workers, wage earners and labors
  2. Facilitate access to the education for children, women and youth from informal groups.
  3. Advocate to the government to provide livelihood skills for youth to uplift economic status.
  4. Build partnership and alliance with organizations working in poverty, education, vocation, environment, WASH and fundamental rights.
  5. Entrepreneurship development through skill enhancement, capital support and business marketing.
  6. Develop community centers to uplift urban poor and migrants for better living.
  7. Create platform in order to advocate youth issues.
  8. Conduct water conservation programs and provide environment facilities.

GUTHI’s Achievements

  1. Conducted awareness raising activities on water management and importance of sanitation for better education at Viswa Niketan Higher Secondary in partnership with International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance (IRHA) and with the support from Republic and State of Geneva.
  2. Supporting the slogan “End Water Poverty”; access to water and sanitation rights, awareness raising activities was organized on the occasion of Water Action Month in Viswa Niketan Higher Secondary School.
  3. Established Community Center at Bansighat squatter supporting the urban migrants and informal groups for the better life and livelihood of people focusing on women and children.
  4. GUTHI oriented youths on effective citizen reporting on social and environmental issues. Lauren Jody Yanks, journalist, The New York Times oriented youths on effective writing.Reporters from GUTHI collected and reported news and information during the time of Nepal Earthquake 2015.
  5. In 2013, GUTHI launched a Radio Program named “Aba Hamro Palo” focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene and different environmental issues including climate change.
  6. Strengthened platform for youth to explore their knowledge and skills through several training on WASH and communication.
  7. Conducted survey on solid waste management at Dallu; coordinated and facilitated on collection and proper management of plastics products at Narephant.
  8. Considering Activated Effective Microorganism (AEM) as a sanitary disinfectant, GUTHI worked in promotion and marketing of AEM through awareness at different organizations.
  9. Formed a coalition of non-governmental organizations and private sectors to avoid duplication of work during Nepal Earthquake 2015.
  10. Supported and distributed educational materials at Shree Chundevi Prathamik Vidyalaya and Narayanjan Secondary School at Machhegaon during the time of the 2015 earthquake.
  11. Launched Menstrual Hygiene Management Programs/ Campaigns in Thankot, Machhegaon and IDP Camps.
