Menstrual Hygiene Orientation and Material Distribution in Machhegaon

Menstruation is an integral and normal part of human life, indeed of human existence, and menstrual hygiene is fundamental to the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls and an important part of the basic hygiene, sanitation and reproductive health services to which every woman and girl has a right. However, menstruation is a too often a social taboo, which is related to the negative cultural belief in Nepal like: menstruating women are dirty, contaminated, they shouldn't be touched. Many girls drop out of their school because of the cultural restrictions and unavailability of   sufficient menstrual needs of women.

It's no more a matter of surprise that they gives some common name to menstruation and feel ashamed of the term itself. As a matter of fact, it matters to all and the silent has to be broken. Sadly, most of the girls in our society, whatsoever, have no idea of the term “menstruation”. So they should be taught that talking about ones’ menstrual period is not a shame but a topic that has to be dealt up front. Facilitating them about the various aspects that they need to take care of during menstruation, for instance, the proper disposal of pad should be our prime concern. It has become the utmost importance not only to women but to men as well. Not just women but men are to be equally aware about the same.

On May 23, 2015, 4 people from Guthi (Nisha Aryal, Bimala Gurung,Shanti Timalsina and Mr. Prakash Amatya) went to Machhegaon with Kumari Mam. The purpose of the visit was to aware the people on importance of menstrual hygiene at the time of disaster, to conduct awareness campaign on menstrual hygiene, to distribute the relief material as sanitary pad including female underwear, toothbrush, toothpaste and soap for menstrual hygiene. A total of 55 packages were distributed on the same day as relief materials.
