A proposed landfill project has failed to take off due to protests from some town residents who do not want a waste management facility near their homes.
Bhimdatta Municipality in Kanchanpur has been grappling with waste management problems for the last two decades. Around 11 to 14 tonnes of garbage is generated within the municipality on a daily basis, according to officials at the local unit. The municipality had issued several public notices in the past searching for five bighas of land to construct a dumping site. But none of the landowners in the municipality is willing to provide land plots for that purpose. For a lack of a dumping site, the collected garbage is buried in large pits in the bazaar area.

Last month household garbage piled up in the streets of Kathmandu for a week. While pedestrians suffered the stink momentarily while they walked past heaps of garbage in the Valley, Kaji Man Maharjan, owner of a grocery store at Teku, had to live with it.“Every time, when the City fails to remove garbage it gets piled up just 50 metres from my shop and the stink comes directly to my shop,” said Maharjan. “Other people can close their windows to stop the odour, but shop owners waiting for customers can’t do that. Besides, business suffers.”This time the garbage was finally cleared after the Kathmandu Metropolitan City reached an agreement with local residents at Sisdole, Nuwakot to let the garbage from the Capital be dumped there.
All the materials on the Earth are useful to some individual at a time. Recognizing the importance of recycling as a resource rather than a waste, the Global Recycling Foundation movement initiated Global Recycling Day. This year is the 4th year of celebrating Global Recycling Day in the world while GUTHI and The Kathmandu Recycled initiated to celebrate Recycling Day in Nepal from 2020. This day is celebrated every year on 18th March. The theme for 2021 is “#Recycling Heroes 2021”.
GUTHI in association with Kathmandu Recycled is organizing a donation campaign for a cause. We all have our wardrobe full but we also have such clothes in our wardrobe that are never used and might be not also in the future. So please donate such clothes to us. These clothes would be provided to the #Sukhawati Foundation for recycling. Sukhawati foundation would reuse or recycle the clothes and a certain amount of the fund would be utilized for the education of underprivileged children whose parents could not afford education to their children. So, let us donate unused clothes and reduce waste and also support education for some needy children.
